After collecting what she needs, it’s time to jump into a menu to brew some “Apothecary Humors.” We then watch the Witch collect various ingredients from around some beautifully-rendered wilderness while donning an upside-down cauldron atop her head -witches are nothing if they aren’t resourceful. Before scurrying out into the wilderness, we get a glimpse of the Witch’s house-bookshelves overflowing with books and trinkets, scattered candles, and a cauldron (duh!) sits at the room’s center. From the opening moment the Witch rises from her red armchair, you already feel a part of this world. Described as ”a crafting adventure game set in an expressive land of gothic fables and fairytales,” your role is that of “the mysterious old witch of the woods,” and are tasked with wandering the countryside collecting magical ingredients to brew your sorcerous concoctions.Īlentrap recently released the first gameplay trailer for Wytchwood. But as I thought about it, and the uncomfortable truth that as I age I draw ever-closer to this classification, I settled on a greater appreciation that the audience for such low-key experiences is more than likely immense.įrom that desire to produce such games, Whitethorn has teamed up with developer Alientrap Games on the upcoming Wytchwood.

So, we’ll be gathering or growing ingredients such as “bottled fear,” solving puzzles, researching spells, and exploring a dark fairytale world.Whitethorn Games has a clear mission for the games they publish, succinctly encapsulated by their Instagram bio: “Low-stress games for nervous people.” I laughed when I first read it, partly because it’s quaint and unassuming, but also because it was humorous to think that “nervous people” would specifically need an entire genre of gaming devoted to them. “Like many fables, these characters take on the appearance of anthropomorphized animals, such as the hungry Wolf, gluttonous Pigs, or brawling Bear who just can’t get his hands on enough honeymead!” From the sound of things, we’ll be in something of a judgemental role, as the devs add that we’ll be passing our “twisted judgement” upon the inhabitants of Wytchwood. “With your magical ingredients, you'll be able to craft spells and potions to exorcise restless spirits, snooze pesky guard-dogs, catch evasive pixies and most importantly, deal with those twelve main baddies!” Speaking of those baddies - Wytchwood will have twelve main quests, each of which has its own specific villain. A lot of fairytale media is sugary sweet, but we wanted to make something that had more fun with the spooky and weird aspects of these stories,” McGibney says.Ĭrafting and exploration are key to Wytchwood, but what else might players get up to? “Just your usual witchy activities like collecting eye of newt, wing of bat, picking oddly smelling mushrooms and strange forest herbs,” McGibney says. "Gothic fables such as those collected by the Brothers Grimm were an obvious inspiration. “You’ll have to unravel the Witch’s secrets as you play through the twelve main quest lines of the game, and what exactly her relationship is with a certain talking goat,” says McGibney, who also hinted that “they both have something to do with the beautiful sleeping maiden that appears at the end of the new gameplay trailer.” If you’ve watched the trailers we’ve had so far for Wytchwood, you’ll have seen that the game combines a sweetly storybook art style with the darker elements of fairytales. What better character to craft magic potions with than the witchy villain of so many of these types of stories?” explains McGibney. “We wanted to make a chill crafting adventure game with a strong focus on narrative stories, so taking inspiration from classic fairytales seemed like the perfect fit.
